Beinn Bheulla: Assault Course

Route: Beinn Bheula, near Lochgoilhead

Corbetts: Beinn Bheula

Date walked: 05/08/2022

Time taken: 5 hours

Distance: 16km

Ascent: 1090m

Having read a number of reports regarding this beast, it was with some trepidation l set off early, following the WH route. Lochgoilhead was where l started taking hillwalking seriously. My parents had a static caravan here throughout the 70s and early 80s, so knew the area well, but for some reason Had not climbed Bheula according to my distant recollection. What did intrigue me was the report’s concerning the descent from lochan below Cruach Nam Miseag. As a family this had been a regular picnic/ fishing spot which was easily attained from Lettermay. 40 plus years and a lot of trees would appear to have changed that.
In terms of the walk l can confirm very boggy on path to south of waterfalls and most of the way to summit and beyond. Fairly well defined path to summit, beginning at the fence line before you meet the trees after the waterfall. Very steep ascent onto summit plateau up a gully but no real difficulties.
Making the circuit means a lot more big and meandering across path less moor. Very wet. The descent from the lochan is as previously described, bit of a pfaff through forest to firebreak, not helped by new fence with no stile at start. A number of fallen branches and trees to work around. After crossing the burn to pick up firebreak was taken aback by how poor the path is now. Not helped by replanting and new vegetation covering detritus left from forestry operations. The major tree blocking path is still there. Most people appear to slide under it. From then you are back on an overgrown forestry track which eventually becomes one clearly still used.
Great walk overall with a few showers, but it would appear this area is now only really frequented by serious Corbeteers. Seems a pity that given the popularity of the Goil that there is little if any development of the paths in the area which would make great outings. Was also a bit surprised by the state of the Cowal Way section around waterfall. Clear that some years ago efforts made to improve the path, but in a bit of a state.
