Long route up the longest Corbett
Corbetts: Meallan Liath Coire Mhic Dhughaill
Fionas: Beinn Direach, Càrn an Tionail
Date walked: 04/06/2022
Time taken: 8.5 hours
Distance: 20km
There is a decent parking area approx 1km west of the track that heads north ish from West merkland and I cycled from it and then up the track itself until the small metal bridge that takes you up the southern flank of A'Ghlaise and then to Carn an Tionail. This is a wide, flat and broad ridge as ridges go.
At the low point between A'Ghlais and the Carn an Tionail I took a leap of faith and headed down the steep west flank of this hill to 450m and then up the also steep far east spur of Mhic Dhugaill to Carn Dearg.
Once on this finer but still flat (ish) ridge it was plain sailing to the summit with stunning views - this can't be done in thick mist - surely
I retraced the ridge and headed NE off Carn Dearg and skirted round the small Lochan a Bheallaich and up to the summit of Carn an Tionail. At this point I was running low on water and a bit 'done in' so concluded that such an approach to this fine corbett should be reserved for a day when you literally have 'all day' - with no concerns around timing, daylight, visibility or temperature.
The route to Beinn Direach was straightforward - And heading back you end up following a vague atv track and from there to the main track - where I met a couple of hardy off road cyclists heading to Cape Wrath I think
Like almost anywhere else in the highlands - or lowlands, this is not a walk i would want to do in any kind of poor visibility
