My 2nd Munro - Ben More Mull (from the South)

Route: Ben More (Mull) from Dhiseig

Munros: Ben More (Mull)

Date walked: 19/07/2016

Hi

(Please excuse my poor English and any misspellings of names  )

A few month ago I asked on WH about the way to Ben More from the shores of Loch Scridain. Thanks a lot for all your help. So here is my first post with my 2nd Munro

I startet at the small parking place at Loch Scridain. It's just on the right of the forestry plantation on the B8035 (you can see the way up on the last picture). From there I followed more or less the burn called Allt Eas an Ime and then straight up to Maol nan Damh.

First I had to fight my way through very wet bracken that came almost up to my head. My pants were wet through - thankfully it was a hot and windy day so they dried quickly. I couldn't find a path - only those made by sheep and cows  so I found my own way through bracken, heather, grass and small burns.

Looking West.

Once on Maol nan Damh I could see my way to the false summit. It's rather steep (steeper than it looks on the photo) and most of it is covered in scree.

Maol nan Damh. The fog's blowing in.

Once I reached the false summit it was an easy, pleaseant stroll up to the summit of Ben More on a well defined track.

I was expecting a lot of people on the summit but there were only two people. I should have made more photos immediatly - before eating my lunch , because soon a thick fog startet to come in. So sadly there are no photos from the view :(

The summit shelter, proof that I was up there!

The two guys startet down along the "tourist route" and I was alone in the thick fog. I felt a little uncomfortable and didn't know should I wait till the fog cleared or follow the two guys down to Dhiseig and hitch a ride back to the car. I decided to retrace my steps down the way I came up. The scree slope was a little awkward in thick fog and I was very carefull not to get to close to the cliffs on the left side. At Maol nan Damh a waited a few minutes and the fog cleared. Now I could see my way down to Loch Scridain clearly. Further down I tried to avoid the bracken and headed a little to the left, where I could see some spaces in between the "bracken fields" and came down at "Garbh Shron" and made my way back to the parking space by the road.

I spend two weeks on Mull and enjoyed every minute of it. I did other walks like The Fossil Tree (not quite made it to the tree), Lochbuie to Carsaig, Lochbuie Explorer, Treshnish Coast.....Iona and Ulva....

A few hours later, sitting by the shore at Pennyghael Stores, enjoying an ice cream and looking at a now fogless Ben More. The summit is hidden.

Mull is just beautiful and there are lots of wonderful walks. The wildlife is just great! I'll be back for a 3rd time 8)
