The Wildcat Trail.
Date walked: 09/03/2022
A walk that is close to my doorstep but had not visited although being staying around here for some time.
An easy walk that is basically an orbital route around the village. Pleasant walking on a old path between Railtrack and the river Spey with in between the fields for sheep and for golf to be played. All changes when the road is crossed and either of the two approaches to the higher ground, the River Calder or by the Allt Laraidh, when the terrain is more like the uphill paths or downhill paths used by walkers to get into the hills.
We chose to begin the walk from the Railway station in Newtonmore and then walk anti clockwise and reach the upper sections by the alternative route up the Strone road to continue. The original route using the Allt Laraidh burn is now closed owing to several hardwood trees that have fallen and damaged some of the path surface.
From here to reach the road in Glen Banchor there follows, certainly at this time of year, a churned of trail of mud with cattle with some deer waste all mixed in.....for me in trainers not ideal. So even then the idea of an alternate way for this section of the walk grew and it would avoid the walking on the Glenbanchor road until the the trail path following the Calder river could be reached.
I came back to follow the trail again a couple of days later this time starting from the Calder Bridge.
An enjoyable couple of days out with lots to see and hear .....Oystercatchers and Lapwings seen and heard and a Curlew heard.
