Craiglich on sunny day

Route: Craiglich, near Tarland

Sub 2000s: Craiglich

Date walked: 11/07/2020

Time taken: 1.75 hours

Distance: 4.5km

First I should say that getting to Craiglich is fairly simple.
The layby at the side of the road is massive and could easily fit 5 cars or perhaps more.

Secondly I should say that this hill is very child friendly, there is only one section which you could attempt calling 'steep' (right after the mini cairn) but it lasts for about 50m only.

So on a sunny Saturday morning, me and my four year old - 'the big R' decided to give this wee hill a bash.
As mentioned before finding the spot is real easy, even if you don't use satnav.

Once you've parked your car crossing the road you see two gates, it's unmistakable to see which one is a field gate and which one is leading up the hill.

After about 100m there is another gate which is locked, however on the right hand side there is a little step over ledge.

Then walking through the woods begins which on the day for us meant a bit of a struggle due to a local midgy invasion. We've sprayed ourselves but I think the midgies thought we were having a laugh. Anyway head-nets highly recommended.

When walking up the main path you will encounter two left turns. Please take the second turn, marked by a mini-cairn. If like we did, you take the first left, you will end up surrounded by even more swarms of midgies and in a field of spiky thistle (not nice).

After returning to the main path and finding the 'right' left (badamp-tss) there is a very short steeper section which leads on to an open and windy (yay no midgies) moorland. After another couple hundred meters the trig points comes in view marking the top of the hill where me and 'big R' had a quick lunch as it was pretty windy.

The only (I believe) way back is to retrace your steps.

Once again, we both had a good time and met some fellow families at the top, I would highly recommend this hill to families with toddlers and children alike.
