Talisker Bay, Preshal beg and More.
Route: Talisker Bay
Date walked: 23/04/2012
Distance: 9.5km
I was intrigued to read about the hexagonal columns on Preshal Beg in
WH report so left car in the limited parking at Talisker. The walk to the beach is spoilt
by a lot of plastic debris, as is also the beach.
There is a sort of path that zig zags up the steep southern side of
the bay which gives quick and easy access to the moor and is then a bit of a slog up to the highest cliff top vantage point, 900 feet of vertical cliff. I have not visited any of the Giant causeway, Fingal cave,
or the Devils tower in the USA but i was amazed at the number of
the columns here, there are thousands, the columns go nearly all the way
around, the only break is in the South East where there is a col
between another column covered lump, ( on map with spot height 337).
From here i took a direct line to Preshal Beg, The Sleadale valley
being quite dry, there seem to be a few old drainage ditches running
through it particularly as i approached Preshal beg, where there are numerous old shielings directly under the scree slopes. The South side of Presham beg and More have reddish columns giving the place an Egyptian quarry type of feel, there is a tongue of grass which leads between the rock columns up a steep entrance to the summit plateau.
The top is wonderful where one can sit with your feet virtually
dangling over Boswell's Buttress with views down to the bay.
A great and quite exhilarating walk, my only regret was not visiting the Broch.
