Cruach nan Caorach

Sub 2000s: Cruach nan Caorach

Date walked: 25/01/2017

Time taken: 3.5 hours

Distance: 8km

Brian and I climbed the hill from the high point of the Otter Ferry road. This had the advantage of beginning the walk at about 300 metres.
Found that the tracks shown on my OS map differed from what was on the ground. There is space for one car opposite the forestry track at the high point of the road, which is very interesting in its own right. Followed the track through the forest for about 200 metres and took the left hand fork ( not shown on my map ) for about a kilometer and a half till it reached a junction where we took the right hand option for about 150 metres. Just before a gate a newish smaller track branched uphill and we followed this till it turned sharply right. At this point a firebreak can be seen straight ahead but we decided to follow the track as it curved round . It became an ATV track for a while as it curved round the trees and emerged on the open hillside almost due west of the summit.
A plod over the open hillside soon had the summit in view. A fence had to be crossed and then a short steeper ascent to the summit trig point.
It was a cool clear January day and the views in all directions were fantastic. We looked east from where we had considered an ascent and were mighty glad that we did not as the route looked very steep - and from sea level.
We decided to head back on a more direct north westerly bearing and soon saw a firebreak and headed for it. It would have been an excellent choice were it not for the many windblown trees and boggy ground. However we battled our way over, under and through the branches and soon reached the track we used for the ascent.
