A fine day and relatively easy parking opposite Balloch Cottage. A sign at the start of the forestry track which says no walkers or cyclists was missed until our return. It was immediately obvious why the sign had been installed although there were two signs, one on each side of the road and the one on the left did not bar access. The track was very muddy and there were many tree trunks lying at the side presumably caused by Storm Arwen in late December. The forestry people had been very busy and the access track was clear although it must have been almost impassible immediately after the storm.
We made our way to Pt 825188 and turned off along a long disused and almost overgrown track which was ok until about pt 824192 whe a number of fallen trees blocked the track. We chose to go left, which was the wrong option, and were immediately fighting our way through dense fallen branches and tree trunks until we fought our way back to the track which still had many smaller branches covering it. However we could see the hillside about 10 metres away and again scrambled our way over and under tree trunks till the way to the top was clear. We again chose the 'wrong option ' in ascending to the trig point. We were able to get very good 360 degree views and noted a very good track yards away which looked much better used than the way we had chosen. We took this track back to the edge of the forest and explored around for an easier descent through a nightmare of fallen trees before deciding that the way we came was the best option. Going back we took the other side of the track which was relatively simple and were soon back at the car.
This tale is just a warning for anyone thinking of Torlum that there may be fallen trees to negotiate.
