Glenshee Six
Date walked: 30/04/2011

The previous week I had realised that while I had thought my Munro count was 81, it was sadly only 75 and as my target for the year is to pass the 100 mark this was very disappointing. This led me to look for a quick fix and the nearest I could come up with was in Glenshee. Having looked through the routes and Walk Reports I decided I didn't want to bother with the fuss of a bike and thought I could combine two of the routes already posted (sorry, can’t find them again to thank you both) by walking back from Creag Leachach over Glas Maol and taking a diagonal across to Glas Choire and down the north side of Sron na Gaoithe to the car park next to the new footbridge at the Alt a Gharbh choire.
Started the drive from Glasgow at 6am with a beautiful day in prospect, very sunny and superb visibility. Faced with a three-hour drive I did my usual and started listening to an audiobook to pass the time. Fascinating story indeed, because it diverted me so well that I was 30 minutes past my turnoff on the A9 before I realised and thus added an hour to my drive. Never mind, I reached the car park which was already very busy and then kitted up, only to realise I'd left my camera at home, thank goodness for mobile phones (all pictures therefore from my iPhone). I started off behind what seemed like a small coach party up the glen towards Carn an Turc but fortunately they took a different route and I was able to enjoy a quieter day from that point on, just coming across the odd pair of walkers at various points. There was actually more wildlife around, starting with a large herd of deer, then snow hares that clearly thought they were still white when they sat in the middle of the only patch of snow around. I then came across another lying newly dead beside the path from Tom Bhuide.
The sun stayed out all day and visibility must have been 60 miles, but there was a steady breeze making it necessary to keep up a brisk pace, and with a lot of miles to cover I did just that. Not much climbing in the whole day except the first section and the ground underfoot was predictably dry after such a great spell of weather. Of course there are a few sections of broken rock to cover, but all-in-all a very pleasant high-level walk.
Finally, I can recommend taking this route if you don’t want to bother with bikes, just be sure to get the correct car park or you have an unnecessary extra section at the start and end of the day. Finally, why can’t the Spittal of Glenshee hotel get some decent beer? Plenty of custom to support at least one real ale.
