- Ideal day out: Sunny day. Clear skies, a fresh breeze, the air full of insects (but not midges) and birds. Starting with a cup of tea by a clear sea, watching the fish and a bit of rockpooling. Then walking inland into old-growth forest with occasional scrambles up and down gorges, stopping to turn a few rocks in the burns and see what wildlife is living there. Going higher into caledonian pine forest and eventually emerging above the treeline into a lush montane landscape of ripe blaeberry and cloudberry. Finally a rocky scramble to an isolated summit with spectacular views. Sudden blizzard, slide all the way back down on a sledge conveniently deposited by a passing eagle and end up in the pub.
