Over the bank holiday weekend I planned two hill days from Glen Moriston starting with an overnight camp on Meall Dubh. The following day the plan was to climb the two 'Glen Affric' Corbetts, Carn a' Choire Ghairbh and Aonach Shashuinn. The glen connecting with Moriston named Coire Dho looked like a feasible approach, and this was confirmed when I read maninblack's excellent trip report from 2022 https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=112246
Parked in the Ceannacroc Power Station car park as suggested by maninblack and offered my flesh to the morning midges as I got the bike ready 🪰🪰😡😡
I cycled all the way to the Hydro buildings at NH178147 which was pretty rough in places, especially for my ancient bike and weedy road tyre. More of that later.
Then headed towards the shoulder of An Reithe, popping in to this rather jaded bothy. Two rooms, couple of beds, tables, chairs, a busted stove. And a toilet????
I followed the good stalker's path onto An Reithe which petered out at about 600m when the gradient eased. Then over short grass and gravel to climb steeply onto the main Munro ridge just south of Sail Chaorainn. There were some exposed slabs at NH135149 which I had to negotiate to get onto the ridge. Would be an interesting prospect in winter, but I think could be avoided to the left (S). I went straight up them for some interest.
From the Munro summit, I continued north along the ridge which had a tricky wee notch between the north top. Carried on along to the minor top of Tigh Mor na Seilge and spent a few minutes failing to find the ruin. https://her.highland.gov.uk/Monument/MHG56869
Descending north I crossed the wide expanse of grass and rocks eventually reaching the Cadha Riabhach. The trees of Glen Affric came into view, and soon accompanied by cuckoo calls. The view to the west was dominated by the next Munro ridge of A' Chraileag and Mullach Fraoch-choire with its toothed summit ridge.
More grassy slopes and a line of defunct deer fence posts led towards the summit of Carn a' Choire Ghairbh. But the well built cairn I reached first was disappointingly not the summit. A couple of hundred metres further east and beyond a gap lay the summit on a rocky rib. This was my furthest point from the bike now, 10km distant.
My water was running low now, but my route would next cross a river for resupply. I headed SE then S off the summit dropping to reach the Allt Garbh at about the 550m contour. It was easy to cross due to the low water level but in spate would have to be crossed further west I guess. After a big drink, I climbed up E to 650m and NE round into the Bealach an Amais. This was spoiled by a few peat hags and mud, but it was dry enough. There's a relatively new estate track that comes up from Gleann Fada here.
Slogged up grass in roasting sun onto the plateau of Aonach Shashuinn and over to the main summit. I could see the smoke of the Cannich wildfire to the east https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-65765053
Over the high ground to the south east from the summit, it was featureless but a lovely place to be. The plaintive call of a Golden Plover off to my left. A startled deer sheltering from the sun in the shade of a peat hag.
At about NH185160 I started my descent back to the bike.
Despite tight contours, the ground was very easy to cover, just grass, heather and bracken. Only a few rocks. Back in the glen floor, I crossed the 'decrepit bridge' in maninblack's report - it was fine.
Hopped onto the bike, only to discover the back tyre was flat. 😭😭 After 20km walking I could have done without that. But had no choice other than push the lump of metal 7.5km back to the car. At least I had a good view.
