Sron Ghlaoidh Short Walk

Summit grid reference NN 23624 88217.
Height: 449 m.
Distance: c. 3 miles
Ascent: 336 m

Driving north through the Great Glen from Fort William, on the A82, just after Stronaba, the ridge of Sron Ghlaoidh draws the eye with its crest of stunted, windblown larch trees. Rising above the settlement of Glenfintaig, at the entrance to Glen Gloy, in Lochaber, Sron Ghlaoidh is the attractive and prominent short south-west ridge of Druim Ghlaoidh, the eastern wall of the Great Glen at Loch Lochy. The ridge is ascended mainly for its wonderful views, though it is an enjoyable short walk in its own right.

Start Grid Reference: NN 22484 86702.

1a. There is space for careful parking at the elbow where the Glen Loy road diverges from the Old Wade military road. Either follow the fence line through bracken beside a small planation, or pick a way up the grassy slopes to the crest of the ridge.

1b. An alternative start, which shortens the walk somewhat, starts at c. NN 2307 8677, a large lay-by further along the Glen Gloy single-track road. A Quad or Argocat track leads straight up the grassy slopes to the ridge. Follow the tracks.

2. Continue along the crest of the ridge, without crossing the deer fence. Circumvent a small group of trees to find a gate through the deer fence giving access to the steeper slopes above.

3. A short climb brings you to the 417 spot height. Continue following the wheel tracks to find the 449 spot height where this walk terminates. Here there are wonderful views north-east through the interlocking spurs of Glen Gloy to the Corbett, Carn Dearg; north west to Ben Tee, Meall a Choire Ghlais group; west to Loch Arkaig and Knoydart, south along the Gret Glen to Loch Lhinne, the hills of Ardgour and beyond.

A further tramp of c.3 miles (and, of course, the same back) leads across a broad trackless and tussocky grass ridge to the summit of Druim Ghlaoidh, 636 m.

4. Return the way you have come.
