Spar Cave - Isle of Skye

Route: The Spar Cave, near Elgol

Date walked: 11/05/2017

Time taken: 2 hours

Distance: 0.75km

Ascent: 20m

Arriving early, before the tide had gone all the way out, we waded in towards the stoney beach to reach the Spar Cave. After adjusting the head torches we entered the cave, leaving the distant sound of waves behind us which was replaced by the range of dripping, splashing and running water in the cave itself. After the initial mud of the entrance we reached the cream coloured speleothem deposits and found to our delight that these were surprisingly grippy and allowed us to climb farther into the cave. Pools, rounded precipitate formations, the majestic roof along with total darkness except for the torches made this cave experience magical. To us, the fact that previous visitors unfortunately have broken off and taken stalactictes with them, didn't influence our sense of adventure. It's just one of those things, when you find yourself in an environment which, with the lack of signs, rails and steps, feels unaltered by humans - and pristine. That's what most explorers look for, the natural wonders. I've definitely added this cave to my favourites list! :D
