Newbie here

After noticing how lazy (and fat! ) I’d become I started looking into hill walking to get some exercise and maybe a new hobby. Having not done any previous regular exercise for four years, apart from a brief period cycling to and walking up Craigowl hill, I looked up the closest Munro to Dundee and thought I’d challenge myself.

After waking up Sunday morning with a bit of a hangover I decided I’d go for it rather than lay in bed all day. Once I’d printed off all the information I thought I needed I set off for Glen Doll car park.

I set off through the forest at a time when most hill walkers would be on their way home, my plan was to attempt the Mayar and head home before it got late. Corrie Fee looked amazing and I was keen to start the ascent. There were a couple of groups still coming down as I reached the top of the corrie and headed toward the summit of the Mayar.

This is when things took a turn for the worst, as I turned round to see the path I had just taken was now completely covered by fog. It had been a bit drizzly all day but visibility had always been great until now.

At this point I thought I’d carry on for a while as long as I was confident I could see the start of the path down. After another 10 to 15 minutes I reached a rocky area with a small metal cross planted in the ground. I realised this probably wasn’t the summit because there was no cairn There were no views at all and I couldn’t see ahead of me so I decided I should turn back before I got lost in the fog

I made my way back down the corrie in a break in the clouds and headed for the car park, after stopping to take in Corrie Fee again. I was disappointed I didn’t reach the top but it was a nice introduction to Munros. I’ll be back to bag the Mayar and Driesh very soon.

I’d be interested to know just how far I got on the Mayar. In my hurry to get down I forgot to get any pictures of the cross! Maybe someone who’s done this Munro a couple of times will know where I was.

I have no report or hill walking skills but if I keep going that’ll change, I might even learn the lingo.
