Cnicht the nicht

Hewitts: Cnicht

Time taken: 1.5 hours

Distance: 6.6km

Ascent: 589m

A few days holiday in North Wales with family. Martha still too young to take into the larger hills and Cnicht was high up the hills to do, especially taking in the view of it from Porthmadog. The Matterhorn of Wales apparently. I could see a vague liking but it looked an attractive hill anyway. The weather had been a bit iffy during the day but after some torrential rain and impressive thunder, I made my way to Croesor, a delightful hamlet at the foot of Cnicht.

The sun was beating down and as I made my way out of the village and off the road, up a wide track, I could still smell the historic downpour and release of vapours into the warming air. Sheep and lambs were aplenty and it wasn’t long before I set my eyes on Cnicht.

From here, it was a gently inclining path through fields before I ended up on a ridge, that opened up the views back to the coast and to larger hills. Moelwyn Mawr seemed much bigger than it’s 770m. The green, green grass of Wales lay down below. A lovely spot to be.

As I wound my way higher, the ridge became narrower until eventually I reached the final cone. I left my walking poles here as it would be scrambly further up. A large cairn seemed a little out of place but still a fine area to linger.

The final climb up Cnicht was a joy; nice exposure but nothing too testing. With fantastic views to hills around and beyond, I hit the summit after an hour of walking. There are bigger hills in Wales but this was an absolute belter. The wind picked up
So I didn’t dwell too long. The view out to see and down the ridge was life-affirming.

I fair pelted off the hill once down the tricky climbs and as I ran through the fields and back to the car, I just flowed. A super experience and there’s a lot to love about Wales.
