On our last day on Rum we awoke early to a beautiful morning.

We were booked on the 3pm ferry so planned an early start and ascent of Hallival, and if possible a continuation to Askival.
The beginning of the route is straightforward to follow behind Kinloch Castle and gently ascends alongside a stream, then becoming a box canyon gorge and waterfall.

When we reached the end of the path navigation became trickier as there is no established path. We followed a route description that took us under and alongside Hallival. A bit of light scrambling was required to reach the summit. It was well worth it however as the views were spectacular but it was very windy at the top! A quick bite of lunch allowed an assessment of whether Askival was likely. I'm not great at exposure and given the windy conditions and our time restriction, we decided that discretion was the better part of valour and headed back from Hallival.

We found a much more straightforward and less scrambly route of descent and made it back to Kinloch in tme fr tea and cake before the scheduled ferry departure.
Little did we know the ferry had hit something (!!!) and we were delayed on Run until after 7pm - we maybe could have squeezed in Askival after all!

All in all a wonderful trip to Rum and only whetted the imagination of what it might be like on clear day. Beautiful!
