Balloch to Helensburgh
Route: Balloch to Helensburgh
Date walked: 01/10/2020
Time taken: 3.75 hours
Distance: 13.5km
Ascent: 300m
We were blessed with really sunny weather as we set off at 12.30pm from the tourist information centre. The Three Lochs and John Muir Way share much of this stage. A slight uphill start leading to the old coffin route which was really easy walking and the views started to open up.
The track continued for a few miles until we reached the forest. Was quite excited here as I heard that the views at the top at superb. It was an uphill climb through the forest sure enough much to the annoyance of my friend but we headed for the unmarked path which took us to the top of Gouk Hill and what stunning views we had - Ben Lomond, Loch Lomond and Conic Hill were there in all their glory! Well worth the little detour. I recommend this. There us another viewpoint sign further in but I heard they were not so good and obscured by trees.
Soon after, the walk left the John Muir Way and it was a downhill walk into Helensburgh and a walk towarda the town centre which was the least exciting part of the walk.
We really enjoyed the walk. It was well waymarked. Definitely try and do this on a sunny day as you can appreciate the scenery much better!
