Stob Coire Raineach (B.E.B.)
Route: Buachaille Etive Beag
Munros: Stob Coire Raineach (Buachaille Etive Beag)
Date walked: 03/02/2012
Time taken: 6 hours
Distance: 8km
Ascent: 925m
This walk would be Kates first time completing a munro and the weather couldn't have been better, nice blue sky and very little wind.We had choosen B.E.B. as our hill to do because of the many reports on W.H.that said it was a great winter route, and after doing just the one summit Stob Coire Raineach we both agreed we had made the right choice. While we were getting prepared 3 other walkers set off all had ice axes and crampons fastened to there packs,we had neither ,but both of us had microspikes ,the lower part of the walk was snow free but with patches of ice visable,so we decided to go ahead and take our time, if the going got to difficult we would turn back. Set off from the carpark at around 09.30 at a nice steady pace. The path is very visable all the way but in some places was totally covered in ice, at these points we simply stepped from the path onto the grass and carried on.As we gained height the views all around us were stunning with every hill topped with snow.Looking back across the glen Aonach Eagach was looking very imposing and stunning in the sunshine. As we gained height the ice was becoming more regular so we decided to try out the microspikes, more about these later, this made the walking a bit easier for us at first, but will be investing in crampons and axe very soon,Continued onwards stopping to take photos every now and then.We got to around 1500ft and the snow was getting more regular ,we had a discussion about what to do turn back or carry on, as it looked as if the wind from the previous days had blown a lot of the snow away from the hill we decided to carry on till Mam Buide and reassess our situation.we got to the col Mam Buide around 11.30 and were given our first view of Buachaille Etive Mor and Glen Etive with the loch in the distance lovely
Time for a bit of lunch and decide which summit to do ,Stob Dubh had a good blanket of snow covering it, so much that two lads were digging a snowhole at the foot of the hill Stob Coire Raineach looked the better choice as there was a lot less snow and the £10 microspikes were starting to fall apart, another good buy from ebay After a bite to eat and a warming cup of tea we set off to complete our climb to the top of S.C.R.,we managed to the top in around half an hour or so without any great problems and were rewarded with more wonderful views of the hills and glens around this beautiful area,we spent around 40 mins or so at the summit and took a few photos of the hills around us and enjoyed the sunshine that had been with us all day We started making our way back down to the col feeling pleased to have done one of the two munros that B.E.B.has to offer ,Stob Dubh will be another day, hopefully not to far into the future, from the col of Mam Buide made our way back to the car park stopping to take some final photos and on to the Claghaig where we had a well deserved bowl of Irish stew and some refreshment A great way to end one of the best days we have had out walking, time to ditch the microspikes and get a winter skills course booked.Click to mark this as a great report.
