Stob a' Choire Odhair

Date walked: 12/06/2024

Time taken: 6.25 hours

Distance: 10km

Ascent: 765m

Most people climb this hill along with Stob Ghabhar just to its west but a different approach is to climb each separately with a thirty one year gap in between which was the approach that I took.

Image
Goats helping themselves to the St Fillans shrubbery. Not something I was expecting but I dare say there are wild goats here and there across the country. Not long before this I had to slow down to wait for a squirrel to skip across the road then onto the top of a wall and then into a tree. Again, not something I was expecting to see and probably even more delightful because of that.

Image
I do enjoy the journey there and I'll stop to admire the sights along the way. It's a long time since I was a more frequent visitor to the A82 and I always used to admire this view of Beinn Dorain.

Image
Took me longer than expected to get round to Victoria Bridge car park and I was disappointed to find that it wasn't the sunny morning that the forecasts had suggested. Still, it was dry and fairly clear and those are two of my main walking criteria.

Image
High quality sign post indicating the way along the initial track.

I'd been surprised by the number of tents along the way and the number of folk already walking until I realised that I was on part of the West Highland Way. Surprisingly, no-one else seemed destined for Stob a' Choire Odhair. I did see one person briefly who must have been headed for the 668m bealach. Apart from that I didn't see anybody else until I was back on the Glen Etive track.

Image
Looking east to Beinn an Dothaidh. This is yet another Munro I could easily have bagged together with Beinn Dorain many years ago (in 1998 I think) but on a winter's day with so-so weather that probably didn't inspoire me very much. Never mind, that looks a nice hill to finally get round to, assuming I manage to do that.

Image
Pleasant view west.

Image
So there's no blue sky but the grey sky produces its own effect of making teh landscape appear more mountainous imo.

Image
I reach the turn off for my hill and I'm a bit disappointed to see a bit of cloud on Stob Ghabhar. Stob a' Choire Odhair should be and easy up and down walk though so I am not too concerned and I'm reasonably confident that the cloud will lift.

Image
An unusually straight stretch of path leading up to the fork for the summit path.

Image
Then up onto the zig zags after a couple of miles of gentle incline.

Image
Still cloud on some hills to the south.

Image
But Stob Ghabhar has cleared!

Image
And Ben Cruachan to the south west is getting there.

Image
View south east also opening up now.

Image

Image

Image
After the zig zags there is some stonier ground to negotiate but it is possible to avoid most of the awkward stuff. Soon views to the west north west also open up.

Image
And from near the summit there are fine views of Rannoch Moor.

Image

Image
View west of Stob Ghabhar and Ben Cruachan.

Image
View north west.

Image
View south east of Achaladair and Dothaidh.

Image
Cruachan now getting quite clear.

Image
I think it has a very fine profile from here.

Image
Had a rest and some food then set off downhill, this time heading slightly west of the path to avoid the scree. I'd decided this would be my last walk in my worn out boots that bought in 2020.

Image

Image
Onto the steepish zig zags but much easier than I thought this might be. Still, two hours forty five minutes up and three and a half hours doon reflects my caution about worn out heels.

Image
Ben Lui I think.

Image

Image

Image

Image
Slides and falls I vaguely recall from 1993.

Image
Blue sky appears once I'm back on the Glen Etive track of course!

Image
Quick diversion north to take some photos then home.

A good walk but a pity I missed out on the fine weather in the afternoon. Still good views though.
