Eagle Crag, Sergeants Crag, Ullscarf and Great Crag

Wainwrights: Eagle Crag, Great Crag, Sergeant's Crag, Ullscarf
Hewitts: Ullscarf

Date walked: 10/04/2012

Time taken: 5.5 hours

Distance: 14km

Ascent: 695m

I completed this walk on a wintry April day and experienced every weather from sunshine to snow. Start the route from Stonethwaite, a small village above Rosthwaite in Borrowdale. There is a small amount of safe parking opposite a public phone box in the village. Cross Stonethwaite Bridge onto the Cumbria Way and turn right - South - up the path till you meet another footbridge to cross the beck. Your intended target, Eagle Crag dominates the view from the start and now you stand below it. From the bridge follow the path on the west side of the beck until you reach the second wall. Follow the wall up Eagle Crag. This is a steep climb and the path is well used. Follow the worn route as it zig zags to the summit. It does involve some scrambling. Once the summit is reached enjoy the fine views. From the top of Eagle Crag look South to your next destination, Sergeants Crag, only 750m away. As you stride along the ridge look left and you will see the next summit Ullscarf. Sergeants Crag has a small rocky cairn sat on exposed rock. From the summit incline NorthEast and contour around the front of Long Crag (below High Raise) to Greenup Edge. From there follow a well worn path and the occasional metal fence post to Ullscarf. This is a long and quite dull route that was very wet underfoot. The map does suggest it is marsh and is not wrong. Ullscarf summit is a sorry place, a small cairn but with great views all around. Continue South to a junction of fence posts where you bear left (NW) and then head for High and Low Saddle. Then incline NW again bearing towards Dock Tarn and Great Crag. This area again is marsh and very wet underfoot. A place you will not wish to visit again. The summit of Great Crag is behind the tarn with a well worn path to its cairned summit. The path takes you down following the outlet of the tarn, Willygrass Gill, and then through the wood on a constructed path back to the Cumbria Way and Stonethwaite.
