An Teallach circuit on winters day

Munros: Bidein a' Ghlas Thuill (An Teallach), Sgùrr Fiona (An Teallach)

Date walked: 14/02/2022

Time taken: 10 hours

Distance: 18.23km

This was my / our second attempt with my hardy walker friend at a winter excursion round this mountain.
Early start for the day, roads quiet, weather on approach not bad, cold and good visibility.

The first part of the ascend was straight forward, path boggy and wet, lots of erosion.
Weather was ok

As we reached Sron a Choire, visibility was reduced to 15 to 20m and gradually got worse, the snow covering was not to bad.
As we started ascending Bidein a' Ghlas Thuill the wind and snow picked up and visibility was practically zero.
Ice axe and crampons on, we were not going to be defeated.

What felt like a eternity the summit was reached, when the trig point appeared in sight, it was a blessing.
Views were non existent, very windy.
Three crows flew past which was a surprise.

No stopping and onto the next peak, took our time as visibility was really bad, luckily not much snow cover along the pass between the two mountains, a small cornice was present, but the path was navigable.

The ascent to Sgurr Fiona was hard, as it was blizzard conditions, once again what felt like a endless climb the summit appeared, and after a quick congratulation to each other shelter was found for food and a well deserved cup of tea.

Views were still non existent.

Onwards onto the next leg, Lord Berkleys Seat look very daunting in the present conditions, visibility improved slightly.
We stayed on the high path as far as we could then had to navigate blind to the lower section and contour round the remaining hills.
Snow depths were deep in sections, eventually after a long spell that felt like we were going nowhere we reached the second last munro top summit, and continued to Sail Liath.

The descend form Sail Liath was not to bad until we had to turn into the wind, which was like getting shot blasted on the face with the snow. The snow was deep and regular sinking up to the hips was occurring.

Eventually we dropped below the cloud cover and and wind onto the lower section which was practically a river every way you went due to snow melt, it was delight to re-join the path out, by this time legs a bit sore from hitting rocks under the snow.

Overall a good days trek at 9hrs 51m, that was from starting at Dundonnel to when we re-joined the man road.
Got to see two ptarmigans, lots of deer, the ferral goats, who I almost had a encounter on my summer excursion.

Shame not many photo opportunities arose
