Sron Smeur
Sub 2000s: Sron Smeur
Date walked: 27/11/2022
Time taken: 3 hours
Distance: 8km
Ascent: 262m
Having moved to Rannoch this year, I've been walking some of the local hills with the dog. This is a local lump which surprised me wtih its views.
Parking up at a layby next to the road to isles path, we headedup said path in glorious sunshine for a cold November day.
The going was good as we headed along the route, fairly uneventful until we hit the fork in the path which would take us towards Lochan Sron Smeur northeastwards. Here we hit some fairly boggy ground which needed some care not to sink into! Soon we were at the Lochan which was looking fine in the midday sun.
From the Lochan we headed up a pathless steep slope, following the line of a deer fence and some unpleasant terrain upwards.
After a couple of false summits, we approached the top with fantastic views opening up in the clear day.
Reaching the summit, despite the small stature of the hill, there were great views all round.
View back towards Lochan Sron Smeur and over towards Blackwater Reservoir in the distance.
View towards Loch Rannoch and Schiehallion faint in the background.
View towards Loch Erict and Ben Alder with a photobombing dog!
View towards Loch Laidon and Rannoch station barely visible.
Blackwater Reservoir on the left and the Carn Dearg ridge on the right.
View NE towards Lochan Loin nan Donnlaich.
Having enjoyed the summit views, we descended south west off Sron Smeur along a gentler slope. However some heavy going with rough boggy terrain and uneven ground. Dog caught the scent of a herd of deer and had to be put on lead to prevent an unwanted chase.
Herd of deer spotted on the crest of a subsidiary hill coming off Sron Smeur. Some more rough ground as I made my way down towards the original track.
Dog surveying the land towards Loch Eigheach Gaur Reservoir.
Wonderful little walk in the Rannoch wilderness all in all. Not the most strenuous but some rough ground to contend with. Beautiful views from the top on a good clear day.
