Winter on Wyvis
Route: Ben Wyvis, near Garve
Munros: Ben Wyvis

Time taken: 6.75 hours

Cracking day up Ben Wyvis. Great drive up and arrived at car park about 10:00. Walked up the valley to the foot of the mountain and where the gradient gets steep. Had a cracking walk up, very steep with steps but I prefer a steep walk. Hit first snow patches about 600 metres and snow line reached at about 700/750. Rain/snow/sleet on the way up but as I got further up snow was more persistent. Temperatures very cold but I was well layered and I was having a great day walking up the snow covered path. Stopped for lunch and got blasted by the wind the whole time in what I thought would be a sheltered spot . I continued up to the summit plateau and the first top, An Cabar. Once reached, got the map and compass out and took a bearing to get myself to the cairn at Carn a' Chaiptein as shown on the map. From there another bearing to the top of the cliffs (well not quite as they were corniced) just before the summit and then a final one to the summit. Conditions from the An Cabar to the summit across the plateau varied from total whiteout to near whiteout where the snow cover didn’t quite cover the rocks. In the whiteout however, a look left showed the line where the plateau descended the western aspects and to the right was the unmistakable outlines of the cornices. A very intimidating sight indeed, especially in whiteout with no reliable way to judge distance. A wide berth was gladly given. With the cornices to the right, I couldn’t help recall the story told in chapter 8, page 112 of "The Munros In Winter" by the late Martin Moran. As I approached the summit, I hunted the summit trig point but I could see no sight of it, surely it would appear in the white soon enough? Appear it did, well the surface at least, the rest being buried. With lunch already scoffed and no sights to sit and wonder at I turned tail and headed back. I followed the three same stages that I had used to reach the summit from An Cabar at the southern end of the plateau and despite an initial bit of disorientation (thankfully only about 10 feet or so from the summit trig point so I could return there and double check my bearings) I headed back. Halfway along the plateau, in the panoramic white, all of a sudden the cloud broke and I had magnificent sights of the surrounding landscape. For the first time I could see where I was going which was very welcome. I contoured round An Cabar on the 920 metre line and re-joined the path down. The path was now much more covered in snow that on the way up but as with the entire walk no crampons or ice axe were needed. Continuing down below the snow line I reached less steep ground once again and walked down the small valley back to the car park. What a day, a cracking winter day on the mountains! After 6hr 52 mins I reached the car, got those boots off and headed home (with a pit stop in Inverness for a chippy of course). Roll on the next one.
