Amazing Day
Route: West Highland Way 7: Kings House to Kinlochleven
Date walked: 30/05/2015
Distance: 14km
One of the first proper walks my partner and I have done, this was a fantastic route and gave us a great day out.
We started from the Ski Centre at Glencoe and walked down to the Kings House. From there the path was very nice, undulating but crossing some nice track. The hills around us were pretty dark due to the cloudy and changeable weather but that simply added to the charm.
staying on track we eventually reached the Devils Staircase which I had heard a lot about and was quietly worried about it, as the idea of us starting walking is to get fit not die in the attempt! I needn't have been worried, yes it was strenuous but it was a straightforward enough walk on a good path. Getting to the top was amazing, the view across the neighbouring ranges were gorgeous and the weather had lifted so there was even a bit of sun.
We were heading downhill now and the path down does get quite tricky in places, theres a good view of Kinlochleven and although you think that you are nearly there, its a good bit away yet! A couple of falls and a minor strain of the ankle later we had headed down past an area where large pipes go downhill towards the factory.
Down past the reservoir and waterfall areas and we made the mistake of coming off the WHW path early at a campsite/hostel area near the Aluminium factory rather than going on. We'll have to go back soon to do it properly.
This was a wonderful day, our first proper walk of this path and I can't wait to walk another one.
