A lovely day at last, so decided to climb Beinn Donn in Appin. I parked at the graveyard and set off by walking along by the stone wall, towards a new house. Just after crossing the cattle grid at the house turn right to go through a wee gate and carry on to the second small gate. After that, head up hill towards an open gate onto the hillside. Here you’ll pick up an old ATV track which winds its way about half way up the hill. The track is wet and boggy at times. Eventually it peters out at an old fence. A false summit is visible but looking at the map I could see that the summit was still a distance away. To compensate, great views are opening up all around. There’s no path after the fence and the ground is very tussocky and boggy in places. Eventually made it to the summit but wasn’t quite sure which one it was as there was several high points. So I went on them all to be sure I got it as I wasn’t wanting to come back! To return, I went more or less the same way and picked up the track after the fence.
This isn’t the only route onto the hill. It’s just a case of checking out the map which suits you best.
