Leven to St. Andrews - 32 mile (approx) long distance walk

Date walked: 06/07/2015

Time taken: 2 days

Leven to St. Andrews - a lovely, scenic route along the cost. Well waymarked unless you are going through a town in which case, the path in only well marked going in the opposit direction. Prepare for some alien-esque geology, with strange and wonderful sandstone features. Also, there are lots of caves to be intrigued by. Lots of rock climbing potential with the caves too.

One cave in particular, between Anstruther and Crail, is massive and offered excellent shelter from the rain. Be warned though, you have to brush away several inches of dry cow **** in order to reach solid ground, if you need to cook some noodle brunch like I did....

This path is not suitable to cycle on - I saw someone on it pushing their bike along. A fair amount of the journey would simply require you to push it for miles. Really not appropriate for mountain cyclists.

Many parts of the coast, especially in the last 7 1/2 miles towards St. Andrews, advise walkers not to continue in high tide, instead saying to wait. This is incredibly frustrating, especially if you are in bad weather (as I was) and need to be there by a particular time and there are no suitably sheltered places to wait or camp. There are no safe high-tide alternatives at this point, BUT if you are confident and fit then you can take a risk with a really muddy, narrow, high and unstable passage to dry land. But it is really not recommended - I have strong legs and decent balance can easily carry my 25lbs rucksack.

Apart from that, its a beautiful and fun walk with enough variety to keep you interested, and its not overly demanding. Not really much ascent, and easy navigation. You pass through a town/campsite every couple of miles, so no chance of running out of water. I arrived in St. Andrews at around 5.30pm on the second day, and had a delicious cup of coffee, whilst reeking of cowshit and sweat...quite satisfying if you ask me ;)
