This was the second attempt in the space of 8 days to climb the "yellow hill". First attempt was the previous Saturday where me and my Sis looked to complete the Arrochar Alps with this remote climb, last week we had choosen the route up past the Inverchorachain cottage ( abandoned for a while by the looks) which had included the customary standoff with the heilan coos ,the shot on the tyre swing , the wet climb (jungle like) up through the tall bracken on Allt na Faing and then we scrambled over the hydro road (too early) and found ourselves almost heading over to Beinn Chas. The clouds where low and we relied heavily on Lynn's GPS , that led us to the base of Beinn Bhuidhe which looked formidable at this point . By this time we were maybe 6 hours on the hill and I had personnaly found the route not to take through the bogs, wet ,cold we decided the best course of action was to take a bearing of Allt na Lairige dam when in view and it's hydro pipes. We then stumbled once again onto hydro path(not shown on OL 39) and followed it down . Relief at the sight of Loch Fyne and the weather easied , back at the car after around 8/9 hours.
So here we are again , left the car park 7.45am (just over a hour later than last week) ,straight ahead through to SSE property. To the right you will see a fenced field with a red deer in it and follow the path through the quarry and up and over the style into Merk Park. If anything the hydro path keeps the feet dry for as long as possible. We passed the small reservoir and took a rest at the last gate , when the fog gusted clear the views were spectacular from this vantage point. Up past the machinery and we followed this path till it ended , there was a small cairn on this path that probably signalled to come off the path and start the "wade" through the glen. We followed the burn at the end of the hydro path up a bit and then "GPS" came back on ourselves slightly to get up on the ridge . The climb onto the ridge wasn't fast and wasn't easy , and great relief once we spotted the ridge path. Pace quickened and we where at the summit cairn in no time. We met a "walker" on the top who had came up the Inverchorachain route , we chatted had a bite to eat , took photos of ourselves at the cairn as the views were not to be seen due to fog and cloud and headed back the way we had come. Still on the ridge , there is a small cairn that marks two options of decent, we took the left one as we were keen to see where we had went wrong , the path seemed to disappear and again this time we took a bearing of the machinery / hydro path and off we went .Off the yellow hill in no time and back to the familiar hydro path. The walk back down is hard going and the loose stone can be troublesome especially on steep gradients , however what a sense of achievment in completing the Arrochar Alps and this Munro was a taste of the difficulties faced when you don't have a tourist route to rely on.
