Carn Liath, Braigh Coire Chruinn-bhalgain, (Beinn a'Ghlo)
Route: Beinn a' Ghlò
Munros: Bràigh Coire Chruinn-bhalgain, Càrn Liath (Beinn a' Ghlò)
Date walked: 23/09/2011
Time taken: 4.5 hours
Distance: 17km
Ascent: 950m
Decided on a whim to come and climb Beinn a'Ghlo for some pre winter training after some negotiation with the girlfriend. I get a free day in the hills because I will 'check out' Blair Castle for our future wedding whilst in Blair Atholl. Is it her fault she is naive to the fact I'll see it from atop a mountain? (we've only been engaged for a month!)
No trouble finding this place despite the many tales of wrong turns whilst passing through Old Bridge of Tilt. Parked up just short of of the gate and spent the next half an hour trying to put laces with no ends on back into my boots. After much sweating and cursing I was on my way about 930 and on the track towards Carn Liath.
The mountain was in view from the moment I set off and the massively horrendous scar up its southern flank was clearly visible snaking its way to the summit, popularity is a curse it seems.
After a short time on the land rover track I reached the hut which marked the turnoff to the mountain path and descended slightly onto marshy ground with a fairly wide stream running straight across. Leaping it was the obvious option, coming up just short was the inevitable outcome and so it was with slightly damp feet that I made the uneventful trudge to the summit, topping out about 1045.
The contrast between the slog up over Carn Liath and the snaking ridge up to Braigh Coire Chruinn-bhalgain was a welcome surprise and after a quick water stop I descended quickly to the col, admiring the ridge and making plans for a return trip this coming winter.
The ascent to the second summit was surprisingly short but was over stony ground, hellish for the ankles. The views from the top were wide and expansive with the impressive bulk of the Cairngorms to the north and Blair Castle nestling in the green glen to the south (looks great from here!).
I descended back to the col and picked up an obvious path back round the foot of Carn Liath, careful to keep away form the stalkers on the traditional descent route. On my way ran smack into a herd of deer, looking in the wrong place today boys!
Eventually I came to the track, the long trudge brightened by Loch Moraig, the stunning landscape and the satisfaction that the weather held for the entire day despite the horrendous conditions earlier in the week and a forecast of more to come.
Back at the car for 2pm, 4 1/2 hours all in, an impressive time for me!
