Linn of Dee to Glen Quoich and back via Clais Fhearnaig.

Date walked: 06/08/2011

Time taken: 6.5 hours

Distance: 21.1km

It was a slow start to the morning but today's walk was never going to be an epic all day climb up a Munro as my friend Milner, his dog Colby and I pulled into the Linn of Dee car park at about 11am. Without going into detail, my mates life had been turned upside down to say the least so just to get out and to be with one's thoughts was the only thing we had planned for todays walk. Geared up and ready to go we headed towards the Salmon Ladder just north of the car park. At the the time I did not realise but it had been almost a year to the day we was standing at the same spot on our way to do the Lairig Ghru.

We decided to head for Derry Lodge and take it from there but as time was marching on this is when I suggested walking up past Clais Fhearnaig and down Glen Quoich. As we had stopped at the bridge over Lui Water to get watered I showed Milner the route on the map and decided that this was the way forward.

Thirsty work...

The path for the Clais Fhearnaig is just past the first plantation (NO 058 923) once you've crossed the bridge over the Lui Water. It is a noticeble path but blink and you could miss it. It was a steady climb for about a kilometer following the side of the Allt a' Mhadaidh for about the first half a kilometer then the path starts to via in a north-east direction.

About an hour into our walk we had reached the opening to the Clais Fhearnaig.

It took about 15 mins to walk the length of this small "loch" and to enter Glen Quoich on the other side. From here we had decided to follow the land rover track north getting great views of Beinn a' Bhuird South Top in front of us as well as Beinn Bhreac to the west.

The path soon came to Allt an Dubh-ghlinne which it fords. After deciding to catch a quick bite we continued on the path and over the quite easy to cross, without getting wet, steam. Once over we headed east following the Quoich Water with the idea to ford this river about 1.5kms up stream and then head south on the east side of the Quoich Water.

The second water crossing wasn't as easy as the first without get your boots wet but where there is a will there is a way and eventally we made it to the other side. The path then climbs slightly to give you some nice views from where you have previously walked from as well as Beinn Bhreac, Derry Cairngorm and even Cairn Toul in the far distance.

The next port of call was The Punch Bowl at the foot of The Linn of Quoich where the track we were on was easy going and it didn't seem to take long in reaching there with views over to Morrone. The Punch Bowl was just off the main track by using a footpath. It really is amazing what water can do to rock. We would have stayed longer to take it all in but the midges were out in there thousands.

This last part of our walk was probably least enjoyed by myself as we headed back to the Linn of Dee car park. Just over 3.5 miles on a tarmac road didn't feel great on my feet and a slight drizzle didn't help either but all in all it was a great days walk had by all.
