An Caistiel, Beinn a'Chroin

Route: An Caisteal and Beinn a'Chròin, near Crianlarich

Munros: An Caisteal, Beinn a' Chròin

Date walked: 18/06/2012

Time taken: 7 hours

Distance: 14km

Ascent: 1045m

I decided to challenge myself a bit with this one by bagging two munros on the one walk. The starting point can be easily missed but luckily I had precise co-ordinates tapped into the sat nav. The walk starts very gently and I chose to take the path around rather than head straight through the field. I then began the ascent up An Caisteal but struggled to find any kind of a trail. I thought "well if I go up the way I can't really go wrong". In this case I was right, there was nothing too taxing about the first stage and I soon ended up on a plateau with a well defined trail leading all the way to the summit. Luckily, the weather was fine, dry and sunny and the walk was decidedly pleasant. When the first summit was reached I then began planning the next stage using info from Walkhighlands. Again, the trail towards Beinn a'Chroin was fairly obvious initially but I soon found myself climbing a very steep ascent. I hadn't gone wrong thankfully, (even though I doubted myself) and once again found myself at the Beinn a'Chroin summit. this part of the walk was eventful, interesting and challenging and I was fairly chuffed I rose to it. feeling rather pleased with myself I began to look for the path back down. I started to descend down what I thought was a faint trail for around twenty minutes, it turned out the "faint" part was invisible, there was no trail and I found myself stranded on hazardous ridges. "Golly gosh" I heard myself saying and looked at the options available. I decided on the least hazardous option and began to climb back up the northwest side of the hill. Lesson learned, it's not just about getting up it's about getting back down safely too!!! I went back to the summit and followed the path further than I had previously then made out a long, winding path down the north side. The trail back takes you through boggy, damp fields and there really is no way of escaping the squelching underfoot, but there is a defined path and I did make it back to the start. The walk probably took an hour longer than it should have but I learned several important lessons. Roll on the next one.
