Dun Skeig, Clachan
Route: Dùn Skeig, Clachan
Date walked: 21/08/2017
Time taken: 5 hours
Distance: 6km
If you are heading off the track in stage 2 to go though the broken old iron gate, you will find it old and iron but not broken. It is wired shut with rusty old barbed wire. Easier than climbing the gate is to climb the stone wall at a low point about 10 yards further on ( again taking care as there is a loose strand of barbed wire ). The dun area on top was well worth the visit
In stage 5 the old path has been diverted away from the new house, whose very large "garden" of around 10 acres of grass alone is protected by an electric fence.
In stage 5/6 the track was impassable owing to flooding, and involved a long detour heading back towards the sea to avoid a large area of bog. It is a shame, because the track itself is an old and well built. When you reach a fence you can either turn left to get back on the track by the wooden lodge or go through the gate to the right and head for the beach area.
In stage 6 we recommend NOT taking the right fork as this leads into another very boggy section, but rather fork left and head through Dunskeig Farm.
All in all it would have been a more enjoyable walk if the track had been better maintained. We recommend that wellies are worn.
