Tentsmuir
Route: Tentsmuir Forest & dunes, near Leuchars
Date walked: 18/10/2017
Time taken: 2 hours
Distance: 8km
Ascent: 50m
Lovely open east walk. Set off north on Fife coastal walk from car park. Well signed travelled route used as park of cycle way. Previously reported logging clearly finished and route now open but a little too formal for us so turned towards sea after 800 yards down one of many such paths leading to dunes and beach. There is a northerly pine needle covered track parallel 100 yards towards sea and then trackers at edge of forest and on high tide line . We walked on the high tide line until the nature reserve line and turned to the edge of the dunes as the sands become complex at high tide. We didn't get to see seals but we're careful to keep away from relevant dunes as it was pupping time. Walked down the good sand path on the east of the tank traps which run to the tentsmuir point and then turned in land and back on the forestry roads and paths back to the car park. On the way looked in on the old salmon ice house. Best walking is parallel to the coastal path as this is still made up at this point. Red squirrels in the woods if you are lucky. Virtually flat walk easy going- pick low tide and most can be done on the beach.
