Maol Cheann-dearg and An Ruadh-stac
Route: Maol Chean-dearg ascent, Coulags
Munros: Maol Chean-dearg
Corbetts: An Ruadh-stac
Date walked: 31/08/2020
Time taken: 4 hours
Parked at Coulags and had hoped my E-bike would save time going up the valley but there were so many puncture risk drainage ditches to dismount for that it probably only saved about 20 minutes on the ascent and disappointly not much more on the descent.
Left my bike at the junction past the bothy taking the path heading west.
Planned to do An Ruadh-stac first but it only comes into view very near the Bealach a'Choire Ghairbh.
An Ruadh-stac looking impressive from the bealach.
Maol Cheann-dearg from the same spot.
It was a perfect dry day and the rock was very grippy so that on the descent it was simply a matter of walkind down the large angled slabs.
On the ascent i kept further to the right but although it was very pleasant there was very little interesting scrambling to be found.
The summit has three separate tops and the most southerly top which is not visible from the first one reached has the best views especially down Loch Carron.
Came across a solitary dwarf pine about 650meters altitude. Lots of Juniper in the cracks.
Crossed back beside the lochans rather than the high route used on way out.
Maol Cheann-dearg had more loose scree to make life awkward and i was very aware of the risk of sending loose rocks downwards on the lower third when i was descending.
More great views from the top.
