Main track access restrictions

Route: Càrn a' Chuilinn, via Glen Doe

Corbetts: Càrn a' Chuilinn

Date walked: 22/01/2017

Time taken: 4.5 hours

Distance: 17.25km

Please be aware that from about Sept 2016 and running through for about the next FOUR YEARS the SSE main track up to the Glen Doe hydro scheme is also being used for the Stronlarig wind farm construction and is now part of the CDM construction site. Therefore normal access rules are, i believe, suspended. Two of us today hoped to cycle up the track, do the Corbett and then cycle through to Whitebridge but the very reasonable BAM Nuttall contractor said that the track was not open to walkers or cyclists but as it was a quiet SUnday it would probably be fine to walk up but step well off the track if any vehicles came past. We duly followed this advice and only had waves from the few 4x4 vehicles on the track. During Monday to Saturday i can imagine there will be much more traffic and much less tolerance of being on or beside the track. The GOOD NEWS is that they seem close to finishing a bypass track that looks like it will leave the road about 500m closer to Ft Augustus. Not sure what parking there will be. This will allow walk up this hill without getting in the contractors way and endangering anyone. I can't see anything on the SSE website about this new track. If you're planning a cycle/walk through the Stronelarig basin from the Glen Doe side to Whitebridge via Stronelarig lodge then i can't this being open for a few years yet.
