The Haglands

Route: Beinn Dearg from near Blair Atholl

Munros: Beinn Dearg (Blair Atholl), Carn a'Chlamain

Date walked: 12/11/2020

Time taken: 9.25 hours

Followed the route taken by the gman for these two munros. Left the Glen Tilt car park at 7:30 am on my daughter's bike (a tad on the small side). The river was in spate and looking impressive. Took me a good hour to get to Forest Lodge. Left the bike in the woods and zig zagged up the path. Low cloud meant I didn't get much of a view of Beinn a'Ghlo across the valley.

The cloud cleared approaching the top of Carn a'Chlamain. Got there at 10am, had a clementine to celebrate then headed off towards Beinn Dearg. Walking along the plateau I made good progress on the firm ground. Dropping down into the valley with the burn to negotiate it got quite boggy with a fair few hags. Opted for taking my boots and socks off to get across (knee deep). Encountered a lot of hags on the other side, so made for higher ground, veering off the gman's route a bit. Ended up on the west side of Carn a Chiaraidh in a whole lot more hags. Was glad to get back on higher ground and start making good progress again.

Got to the top of Beinn Dearg at 12:30pm. No-one there to greet me. How rude. Took a few pics in the mist then headed back. Followed the gman's route a bit more closely on the way back, but there was no avoiding the hags. Attempted to jump the burn, but couldn't get much of a 'run up'. Partial fail, left leg in up to the knee, right leg dry.

Got back to my trusty steed at 4pm and peddled back down the glen. Was pitch dark when I got back to the car at 4:45pm. Didn't encounter another walker the whole day.

With hindsight, I would have done this walk in a loop, without the bike, avoiding the return visit to the hags and burn, and taking the standard route up Carn a'Chlamain.
