This has to go down as one of my favourite and yet terrifying days in the hills, my first one actually IN a thunder and lightning storm. A BBQ/rum combo the previous night meant a hangover for Euan and I and a later, slower start - we made the car park at 1 at the weather looked decent. False sense of security - half an hour later we heard the distant rumbles coming up from Glencoe and we knew what was coming. A couple of hours of getting soaked in the flashes of hail abated higher up for a bit to give us an amazing view from Binnein Mor - depth and colours like I had never seen. But the best was still to come...
Just under Na Gruagaichean, following a solid 10 minutes of hail, a double fork of lightning was instantly followed by the loudest thunder I have ever heard. Wow! Sure many other walkers will have similar stories of this day to share. Needless to say, we did not hang about at the summit, and descended quickly (with some stunning views of Loch Leven) all the way back to the car, getting back home, safe, sound and slightly sodden for a late dinner. Class!
