A soggy cold day on Ben Wyvis
Route: Ben Wyvis, near Garve
Munros: Ben Wyvis
Date walked: 11/06/2017
Time taken: 4.25 hours
Another tale from our failed Fisherfields weekend. The forecast wasn't great, but I'm glad we didn't let it stop us.
After a camp at Dundonnell Friday and Saturday, and a fairly easy going walk up Am Faochagach on Saturday, we decided to do Ben Wyvis on the way home.
As the weather was so rubbish, not many photos were taken.
We arrived in the car park around 9 and set off at quarter past. I was a bit grumpy at the lack of coffee I had had, but seemed to have fresh legs which made the going easy for me. It was so muggy and warm as we set off, and wet. We got absolutely soaked all the way up to An Cabar, and the wind was driving the rain straight into our face.
Reluctant to pull the map out in such wet weather, we got slightly excited by every small cairn looking thing from then on. We were quite disillusioned about the length of time it would take to get across to the top. We were all pushing on silently, without a break, and without putting any layers on. All of a sudden, we all got so cold we had to stop and layer up. It was a bit late though, and I think the lack of food was causing a lot of heat loss. However, we pushed through to the top and I had mild excitement at getting my 50th munro in the bag. We were jolly enough to take some selfies!

As we headed off, in search of shelter, the visibility was still awful.

Until....15 minutes later...

The clouds started to clear and we got a view!

That lifted spirits and we got the shelters out and had well deserved lunch and annihilated Jen's jelly babies. Most of us had the shivers by this point and were hoping to start heating up on the descent. We ploughed on down, met a dog (yay!) and gave some tourists a mild discourage from going to the top as they asked "How long is it until the top of the hill" whilst wearing jeans....
A coffee and a cheese toastie at the cafe by the roadside after Garve and the drive back to Aberdeen commenced. Lots of minging wet and muddy kit in the boot to be sorted....
