Meall Corranaich and Meall a'Choire Leith 27-04-13

Munros: Meall a' Choire Lèith, Meall Corranaich

Date walked: 27/04/2013

Well I have driven passed these two to do other Munros in the area and read the reports saying they were a bit boring so left them til last in the group.

When I drove passed last weekend from the Loch an Daimh two I was thinking, great no Ice Axe or Crampons needed so a light load, but kept them in the car anyway. On approach to Killin I realised that the rain forecast Friday night Saturday morning ended up as snow on the hills, which looked absolutely lovely.

Had to drive a little further along the road as the spaces were full near the start of the walk.

Ice Axe and Crampons packed after checking out Meall Corranaich from the road. It was a bit cold so the jacket and other layers put on from the start.

Start was simple enough as it says in the guide book and yes watch out for the boggy peat hags, but good fun dodging them and a good way of heating yourself up.

With the clear views of the summit and the way ahead it was easy to plan a route to take to the top, but with fresh snow laying on the grass and older snow fall, you had to be carefull.

Progress was good and at one point I thought about taking the jacket off as the sweat was pouring out of me, then it hit, the wind from the North West was strong and very very cold.

The final push to the top was interesting with the fresh snow and ice in places so care had to be taken here.

Well what views from the summit, such a clear day and this boring hill came to it's own with it's neighbours on all sides looking splendid in their winter coats.

After some 20 minutes just looking around and chatting to other walkers, I looked ahead to Meall a'Choire Leith and headed over still taking in the views.

Normally a straight forward decent down the grassy slopes of a'Choire Leith, but again care had to be taken because of the conditions. The good thing about the clear day is that you can see where you want to go and zig zag down the slope to stay safe.

Once down you have the bog to walk across to get back to the start.

A good day out and very enjoyable.

Drove down the road to Lochan na Lairige for a hot cup of tea and sandwich before my drive home.
