Pleasant bits. Others barely accessible
Route: River Earn walk - Crieff to Muthill
Date walked: 13/09/2021
Time taken: 5 hours
Distance: 10km
Left from Crieff Town centre and followed the Stirling road till just before the Visitor Centre about 3/4 of a mile out. The path takes a rather inexplicable detour past a field and then through some woods which are nice enough but with the exception of some lovely hymenogatracae and brittle stems fungus we saw are nothing spectacular. A 250m road walk can cut this bit off. Across the car park of the derelict Crystal Stuart warehouse/factory/shop and along a field to join the river. Saw Heron and several kingfishers. Very pleasant river. Took a detour to Bennybeg pond, an easy walk away and well signposted. Retraced our steps. There is a badly undercut section of path at about NN876 196 for a while and the overgrown grass means you really need to watch where you are treading. Just before and just after the old railway bridge over the river is, as others have said, appallingly overgrown and barely walkable. The landowner is presumably responsible for the fence preventing walking on the ample unfarmed edge of the field (as may be his right) which suggests they are never going to bother dealing with the footpath. When you resume walking on the trackbed rather than below the embankment after 1/4 mile it is better walking. More nice fungus to be seen as the signs send you around the edge of Sallyardoch Woods, I suspect the road would cut off about 1/2 a mile overall and then it is a quiet roadwalk into Muthill with some nice views up to Ben Chonzie and a little beyond. Muthill old church is worth a little wander. Some interesting gravestones have depictions of tools from the deceased working life struck into their reverse side. As a walk, I'd echo someone on this forum who suggested not to bother in summer, although the Riverside walk is at its best then, but only to attempt it in winter when it is likely to not be so overgrown and unmaintained
