Route: Ben Wyvis, near Garve

Time taken: 5 hours

Distance: 14km

Ascent: 935m

Finally managed to bag my first munro last friday. Ben Wyvis- Glas Leathad Mor at 3432ft. Had and early start and arrived at Ben Wyvis carpark on the A835 Ullapool road at 0800hrs. Got my gear on and let the dog out of the car and into the nearest muddy puddle. :) The path is well constructed and is easy enough to follow. A quick climb through the forest along side Allt a' Bhealaich Mhoir and out into the open for a first sighting of AnCabar at 946m. FIrst impression is one of "bloody hell that is steep". My dog was in his element so off we trudge towards the start of the climb. The climb is as steep as it looks, ended up with heel blisters :( . NOw we reach the dreaded stone stairs i have read about on WH. These steps go on and on and on.... its hard to enjoy the view and keep and eye on the steps to avoid and mishaps. the dog on the other hand is up and down them like a rocket. I was lucky at this point to see a pair of Ptarmigans, one still in its winter plummage, sitting on the steps looking at this guy puffing his way to the top. At this point the good clear weather changed rapidly as we went through the low lying clouds. At the top of An Cabar the sleet was really driving in the wind, reducing visiblity to around 20m. Honestly if it werent for the line of cairns and the old map/compass duo id probably have turned back, however i trudged on along the ridge in the variable weather, and finally reached the trig point. Absolutely no view and freezing at the top so no point in hanging around. Off we go to retrace out steps and descend An Cabar to have some lunch. All in all it was good to reach the summit of myfirst munro and the Ptarmigan were a first for me in the wild. Happy enough with the time it took me also. An enjoyable wee day in the hills. And one tired springer spaniel (no easy feat).
