Busy day on Ben Vane

Route: Ben Vane, from Inveruglas

Munros: Ben Vane

Date walked: 02/07/2011

Time taken: 5.1 hours

Distance: 11km

Ascent: 930m

Started off from the car park at the visitor centre at Inveruglas, followed the usual route along the path way and under the railway bridge but once onto the road to the Sloy dam started to see a lot of walkers and they all seemed to be heading for Ben Vane. After going over the bridge onto the forestry road i had difficulty seeing the start of the path but a group further on had cut right and started their ascent so i decided to follow on and look for the path on the hill, they seemed to miss the worst of the boggy ground and once i reached the ridge the path was visible. The path is quite erroded in places but although steep is fairly straight forward. Although i had learned of the false summits from previous reports they still managed to catch me out. I was lucky enough to pick a rare warm day so with the heat i found the little hill a tough hike but it was worth it reaching the summit. The views from the summit were amazing and looking over at Ben Vorlich i was left wondering how i ever managed up it as it looks so steep. On the way down a rescue helicopter was hovering around which was quite spectacular to see, i think / hope they were practising their manoeuvres. The walk down was fairly straightforward and managed to follow the path all the way to the forrestry commision road. The boggy bits were not to bad. :D
