Ever since I moved into my house two years ago I have been looking out the window at Queensberry and promising myself I was going to climb it! It's the first thing I look at every morning when I get out of bed. Finally got myself motivated and set off on a beautiful Friday morning for Queensberry, took the wrong turn at Loch Ettrick but turned around and got to Mitchellslacks no problem in the end. Got out the car with the girlfriend at 10.10am and walked through the pleasant farm. Gave a wave to the farmer who was passing on a quad. The walk is on a rocky easy to spot path and you pass through several gates. The going at this point is easy. with the track gradually rising above a valley with a river running through a few hundred feet below (quite a picturesque sight to see). The path winds on further until you see two abandoned cottages in the high hill country.. Before you reach the cottages there is a gate which you cross and then you veer off to the right up a very steep bit of hill, I was panting at the top of the ridge but I'm very unfit (one of the reasons I'm back on the hills again is to combat this). We had a map and guide from walkhighlands but we managed to misread it slightly and took a bit of a wrong turn heading between the now visible hill of Queensberry and its little brother Wee Queensberry. I realised half way along the track that we had taken the wrong turn so we headed straight for a cairn on top of Queensberry across some slightly boggy ground and a few rocky outcrops. Was probably a tougher walk than it needed to be but nonetheless Queensberry is a fairly easy climb. The cairn I had spotted from below I knew was too small to be the true summit (didn't want to tell girlfriend this) but once at the top it was only a slightly further walk to the main cairn. Spent fifteen minutes on the summit taking pics and having a snack. I was surprised at how close the Moffat Hills are from the top, but a quirk of geography makes Queensberry appear to be nearer to my hometown Dumfries. Good views all around could see a storm lashing the hills ten miles away in South Lanarkshire but thankfully it was dry where we were. Could make out a faint outline of the lakeland fells and Skiddaw (one of my favourite sights from anywhere) I am assuming on a less hazy day the Lake District would be even clearer! Be warned the hills isolated position (there is no other hills between there and the Solway) means even on a warm day it can be very cold! We followed the correct tracks down the hill and were back on the flat in no time. Back at the car for 1.25pm so if you deduct the break its about a 3 hour walk there and back, and thats for someone unfit like me! I enjoyed Friday at Queensberry good practice for the other hills and mountains I have planned this summer.
