Dyke walk, Darvel

Route: Dyke walk, Darvel

Date walked: 28/03/2024

Time taken: 1.75 hours

Distance: 6.74km

Ascent: 183m

Logged out of work about 2pm today and I'm not heading back until the 9th April so I wanted to start my annual leave with a lovely little wander. It was a bit of a high anxiety day, so I had to take a fair few breaks just to convince myself to keep going. The walking took 1 hour 48 minutes, the whole trip was closer to 2 hours 20 because of that! Still, sunset is late enough that it wasn't a worry and I could enjoy myself as much as possible.

The walk was lovely. The car park was quiet when I arrived (about 3pm) and the path at the beginning is really good - tarmac most of the way to the turn at the farm. Here's where it gets fun! The path is initially quite muddy, and a lot of care should be taken if it's muddy here as the only thing to grab onto if you slip is barbed wire. It gets worse the further up you go, and by the time you're under the plantation you might as well have taken a snorkel. I was genuinely worried my boots might get left behind! I'd never been so excited to make it back to the tarmac roads for something more solid beneath my feet.

The views are absolutely gorgeous. My phone camera wasn't quite good enough to pick it up (though on a day with even better visibility - the clouds were coming and going and there were showers in the area, though I managed to avoid them) you could see across to the mountains of Arran in the west and to Loudoun hill in the east.

On the walk through the estate, there were actually some waterfalls that took me totally by surprise - they were a lovely addition to this walk. :D
