Strathaven, Sandford and Spectacle E'e falls
Route: Strathaven, Sandford and Spectacle E'e falls
Date walked: 09/03/2024
Time taken: 1.3 hours
Distance: 5.4km
Ascent: 100m
This little loop was a lovely way to wake myself up on a very blustery Saturday morning! I arrived in Strathaven around 10:30 and there were still a few parking spaces left (though I can imagine in summer or on a slightly better weather day this might not be the case).
I followed this walk in reverse, taking the roadside path across the river on the outbound, to give me the waterfall and river on the way back - definitely my preferred way of doing things! The paths were good underfoot almost the entire way, just a short section on the east side of the bridge that's a bit trickier with the roots (and a tree that'd been blown over in some of the recent winter storms that required some creative thinking to get underneath).
The waterfall itself is stunning. I found that a lot of other people walking the route seemed to pass the very short 20 second detour to get the full view of it - a loss for them! There's a sign telling you a little about the history and you can still see some of the remains of the mill.
Back in Strathaven about 1hr 20m after leaving, even if the wind would've rather I ended up in Edinburgh.
