Autumn in the Forest

Route: Devilla Forest - Four Lochs, near Kincardine

Date walked: 15/11/2021

Time taken: 3 hours

Distance: 9.75km

We followed the route exactly as detailed in Walkhighlands and found the found the instructions were spot on.
It was a calm, sunny autumnal day, so the reflections on the lochs were lovely. The viewpoint at the end of Moor Loch is particularly pleasing, and the bench there means it would be a perfect spot for a picnic. Conditions underfoot were a bit mixed, there are some soft and muddy sections but for the most part the paths/ tracks are solid. It struck me that this would also be an ideal walk for a windy day, as the trees would offer some protection. Too many woodland walks in Scotland are ruined by wall-to-wall conifers but in Devilla the woodland is mixed and I particularly liked the Scots Pine at the start of the walk. On the day we visited the wildlife was rather quiet but we did see plenty of goldcrests in the trees and even caught a brief glimpse of a red squirrel. We rounded off the walk with an al fresco lunch at a picnic table back at the car park.
To sum up, this walk is ideal for ramblers (like ourselves), dog walkers, families and cyclists alike. I will certainly return before too much time has passed.
