Climbed from the west

Sub 2000s: Beinn Bheigier (Islay)

Date walked: 01/06/2018

Time taken: 3.5 hours

Distance: 16km

Ascent: 440m

Staying at the campsite in Port Charlotte I had planned to walk the usual route from Claggain bay however I noticed at the last minute a track on the map from Cluanach - NR370594 - that seemed to offer a route towards the hill that would save me at least an hour of driving while adding a few km to the walk.

At the above location I found there was space to park one, maybe 2 cars without obstructing the track itself. The summit of Beinn Bheigeir could be seen but looked very far away, accentuated by the haze.

An easy walk up the track which eventually dips down to the burn at 407582 then climbs away again. We followed it but this led onto some quite rough, tiresome and undulating ground and we quickly descended, crossed the burn and took the direct route towards the summit.

This area could probably be quite boggy in wet conditions but was ok for us. On reaching the shoulder at 420568 the gradient levelled out before a steep pull to the summit on loose but fairly straightforward ground.

The view was limited by haze but could see enough to make it clear this would be an outstanding viewpoint on a dry day. Views over islay itself were extensive and give a feel for this islands great wise open spaces.

We returned by more or less the same route, aiming to cross the burn a little further downstream than before. At approx 410582 we came across an interesting feature where a burn keeps disappearing and reappearing from the ground. It appears to be an old mine working and I mention it as there is at least one open shaft which we nearly stumbled into in broad daylight - take care of investigating the area!

All in all this seems a good route to see a bit of the vast empty centre of islay, if the walk in and out is slightly tedious, I feel it was time better spent than driving the Extra 40 mile round trip if coming from the north of the island.

The hill itself while only 491m is quite tough going and feels pretty prominent when on top, I’d say the equal of many Munros in both respects.
