Ben Avon in the sunshine

Route: Ben Avon via Gleann an-Slugain

Munros: Ben Avon

Date walked: 13/07/2013

Time taken: 8.63 hours

Distance: 33.5km

Ascent: 1004m

An early start, up and away from home at 5:30am on a nice sunny morning. Pleasant drive to the Car Park at Keiloch, a bit cloudy at the peaks at this point but sun fighting through.
Headed off through the estate and past the pine trees and alongside the forest beside the stream. Sun was breaking through nicely now and tops of all the peaks are clear. A good stride out through the glen towards ‘Fairy Glen’ – well worth taking the lower route to go through here, it was a nice sun trap and very scenic. Path headed right after here into an open glen, made the walk very enjoyable. Reached the start of the path up to the bealach, and up to the Sneck where we saw our first person of the day, who had completed Ben Avon and was heading on to Beinn a’Bhuird at a good pace.
It was very warm now, and the steep path up towards Ben Avon was very dry and gravelly. We took our time and climbed up towards the plateau and then a good brisk walk to the Tor and top out in the sun. Great spot for a food break which was needed after such a long haul. We sat overlooking Slochd Mor – stunning.
The descent down to the Sneck was interesting at the steep parts as it became a test to avoid sliding down rear first
From here it was a very enjoyable walk back, taking in the scenery that we sometimes miss heading out on a walk as we tend to push on a bit. Spotted a herd of deer atop the Carn Eas as we rounded it on the way back.
Back via Fairy Glen just to appreciate it a bit more then a long slog from here to the Car Park. The fruit pastels saved the day from here to Car Park as it was still sunny and warm and they kept the mouth watering. A cold bottle of water was well received back at the car – a fine end to a great walk. :D
