Fun?

Route: Beinn a' Choin, near Inversnaid

Corbetts: Beinn a' Choin

Date walked: 28/09/2014

Time taken: 4.5 hours

Make no mistake, this is a thankless ascent. The WH route description is bang on - no real clear route to the summit, very thick grassy slopes with lots of peat, sub-surface water and holes in which to twist your ankles!
It's also fairly steep in places, and the new deer fence ensures that if you approach too far along the main track you'll be traversing back South to locate the single gate which is towards the southerly end of the bealach. After that you'll be drawn, as I was, to the false summit at the southern end of the Beinn, ignore this and follow the gullies straight up to the true summit at the northern end of the hill.
Because of the conditions underfoot you will likely spot more indigenous wildlife than on more heavily travelled hills; there's a lot of birdlife, frogs aplenty, and I spotted a couple of very hungry Wooly Bear caterpillars merrily munching their way through the high grass!
On the plus side once you reach the summit the views in all directions make it a very rewarding morning's work, taking in pretty much every iconic peak in the region on a good day.
On your return back to the car park take advantage of the numerous ATV tracks between the newly planted tree nurseries below the deer fence's gate for a direct route back to the sheepfold. They got me back to the car park in under 90 mins from the summit!
