Glorious day for a gentle stroll
Route: Glen Devon Reservoirs, Glen Devon
Date walked: 11/04/2023
Time taken: 3.5 hours
Distance: 8.5km
The walk up to see the two Glen Devon reservoirs was a lovely gentle one, on a gloriously sunny day with just a gentle breeze.
We started mid morning after a lazy (and filling) breakfast, wanting just to air out the lungs before the long drive back to England (and also to tire out the kids in the hope of a peaceful drive ). The small layby already had a car and a minibus in it, leaving just enough room to park. This may be a problem on busier days in the summer or at weekends.
As we left the main road and headed up the private road toward the reservoirs, the beauty of Glen Devon unfolded all around us and the tranquility was incredible. The walk from the road as far as the dam of the lower reservoir is very gentle, with only a small amount of ascent, and the tarmac road makes it easy going, and perfectly suited to lightweight footwear - which was a blessing as we had packed no boots for the weekend.
As we reached the first dam, the road snaked up gaining height a bity faster, and giving ever better views back down the valley. Once at the same height as the first reservoir a few fishermen were seem wading in the water enjoying a most peaceful day after the busyness of the Easter weekend.
We walked along the road, past the small fishing shack, which had signs showing it provides hot and cold drinks and snacks (we did not partake), taking in the views across the reservoir to the hills beyond all the while slowly gaining more height.
The road starts to climb more sharply as it enters the woods toward the far end of the lower reservoir, but nothing too steep or strenuous (which was a blessing as I was carrying a toddler and a bit of winter excess myself). On reaching the peak of this ascent the upper reservoir came into sight, and was far closer than I had expected.
The slight descent to the upper reservoir was very quick to complete, and we were at the dam in no time. Unfortunately the water level was below that of the outflow , so the spectacle of the water rushing down the spillway was not there for the kids to see.
The return journey was equally pleasant, and the views down into Glen Devon very welcoming rounding off a great stroll perfectly.
