The Border country - so often bypassed by visitors from outside Scotland - turns out to be a delight on closer aquaintance. Here are fertile pastures, beautiful valleys and range after range of rolling green hills, fringed by a fine coastline - all ideal country for the walker. The area is crossed by a multitude of paths and three excellent long distance routes.
Not the least of the attractions in the Borders are the characterful country towns such as Kelso, Melrose and Peebles, packed with good pubs. There is plenty of wider interest too, from the romantic ruins of the Borders Abbeys to medieval castles and some grand stately homes.
We feature both short strolls for all the family to longer, more challenging outings and hillwalks, as well as the three great long distance routes. Every route is illustrated with a free Ordnance Survey map. There are also listings of places to stay, including hotels, self catering cottages, and hostels. Each route is downloadable to your GPS.
